At Thrive Dental Studio in Portland, ME, we understand that dental emergencies can be stressful and painful. Dr. Dan Figueiredo, our experienced dentist, is here to provide expert guidance on recognizing and managing dental emergencies effectively.

How Do I Know If My Dental Issue Is An Emergency Or Can Wait?

Determining whether your dental issue is an emergency or not can be challenging. However, there are clear signs to watch out for. Dental emergencies typically involve severe pain, bleeding, or visible damage to teeth or oral tissues. If you’re experiencing intense discomfort, persistent bleeding, or a dental problem that affects your daily life, it’s likely a dental emergency.

How Does Thrive Dental Studio Handle Dental Emergencies?

It’s important to stress that not all dental emergencies result in immediate treatment. We want to ensure your well-being and safety, which means sometimes the initial visit may involve an evaluation and assessment rather than immediate intervention. For instance, we can often re-cement a dental crown, but occasionally, fractures are severe enough that recementation is not only impossible but strongly advised against due to the risk of aspiration.

Additionally, many visits may result in referrals to either oral surgery or endodontic specialists. We understand the urgency and try our best to work with specialists to get appointments quickly, but that is not always guaranteed. We know that patients may be upset when emergency visits do not result in immediate treatment, but please understand that our priority is your well-being and ensuring you receive the most appropriate care, even if it requires further evaluation or referral to specialists. Your oral health and peace of mind are our top priorities.

What Are The Most Common Dental Emergencies?

Dental emergencies encompass a range of situations, but some are more common than others. Here are the most frequent dental emergencies:

  • Severe Toothaches or Abscesses: These can indicate underlying infections and require immediate attention.
  • Broken or Chipped Teeth: Damaged teeth can lead to further complications if not treated promptly.
  • Knocked-Out Teeth: If a tooth is knocked out, time is crucial. Try to reinsert it gently or store it in milk and seek help immediately.
  • Lost Fillings or Crowns: Leaving these issues unaddressed can expose your teeth to decay and damage.
  • Orthodontic Emergencies: Broken wires or brackets should be addressed quickly to avoid discomfort and further issues.

What Are The Potential Risks Of Delaying Treatment For A Dental Emergency?

Delaying treatment for a dental emergency can have serious consequences. Ignoring dental pain or injuries may lead to:

  • Infection Spread: Dental infections can spread to other parts of your body, affecting your overall health.
  • Worsening Pain: Pain often intensifies with time, making treatment more complex and uncomfortable.
  • Costly Procedures: Delaying treatment may result in the need for more extensive and expensive dental work.

Understanding the Complexity of Dental Emergencies

It’s important to stress that not all dental emergencies result in immediate treatment. At Thrive Dental Studio, we prioritize your well-being and safety, which means sometimes the initial visit may involve an evaluation and assessment rather than immediate intervention.

For instance, we can re-cement a dental crown; however, occasionally, fractures are severe enough that recementation is not only impossible but strongly advised against due to the risk of aspiration (inhalation of a foreign object).

Urgent visits may result in referrals to either oral surgery or endodontic (root canal) specialists. Patients may encounter situations where specialists are unable to accommodate same-day or same-week appointments. Please understand that our priority is your well-being and ensuring you receive the most appropriate care, even if it requires further evaluation or referral to specialists.
